What to eat on Mounjaro
Eat small, protein-first meals, slowly, and stop when you feel full. Mounjaro quiets your appetite, so the goal is no longer eating less. It is making each small meal count.
The short answer
- Protein first at every meal: eggs, Greek yogurt or skyr, fish, chicken, tofu, beans, cottage cheese.
- Small meals, every 3 to 4 hours, instead of 2 or 3 big ones. Large meals make sickness more likely.
- Go easy on large, greasy or fried meals, especially in the first weeks and after a dose increase.
- Drink regularly through the day, and keep alcohol low. The NHS says it's best to avoid alcohol on tirzepatide because it can make nausea worse.
- Vegetables, fruit and wholegrains for fibre, added gradually if your stomach is sensitive.
Why protein comes first
When you eat much less, protein often drops too. During weight loss, a 2025 expert advisory notes protein targets of about 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of body weight a day, or roughly 80 to 120 g a day. Enough protein, plus strength exercise, helps you hold on to muscle while you lose fat. Work out your own protein target.
A sample day on Mounjaro (about 100 g protein)
| Meal | What to eat | Protein |
|---|---|---|
| Breakfast | Skyr or 0% Greek yogurt (150 g) with berries and a few nuts | 18 g |
| Lunch | Half a jacket potato with tuna (1 small tin) and salad | 28 g |
| Snack | 2 boiled eggs, or a high-protein yogurt | 13 g |
| Dinner | Salmon fillet, greens and a few new potatoes | 27 g |
| Evening | A glass of milk or a small protein shake | 10 to 20 g |
Typical values. Portions are smaller than a normal plate on purpose: eat until comfortably full, not until the plate is empty.
What to eat on injection day
Many people find appetite drops most in the day or two after their weekly injection. Plan simple, gentle meals for those days: soup with lentils or chicken, scrambled eggs, yogurt, porridge made with milk, or a smoothie with yogurt. Keep easy protein in the fridge so you don't skip meals altogether.
What to eat when you're not hungry
- Drink some of your protein: milk, kefir, or a protein shake are easier than a full plate.
- Choose dense foods: a skyr pot gives about 15 g protein in a few spoonfuls.
- Eat the protein part first, then the potatoes, rice or bread if you still have room.
- Set reminders to eat something small every 3 to 4 hours.
Foods that often sit badly
Large portions, fried and very fatty food, and big fizzy drinks are the usual culprits for nausea, reflux and an uncomfortably full stomach. This doesn't mean banning foods. Try a smaller portion first and see how you feel.
