What is food noise?
Food noise is the constant, unwanted chatter about food: what to eat next, what's in the cupboard, whether you should have that snack. Many people on GLP-1 medicines say it goes quiet.
What researchers mean by food noise
For years "food noise" was a phrase people used online, not a medical term. In 2025 a group of researchers published a definition in Nutrition & Diabetes: persistent thoughts about food that the person finds unwanted or distressing, and that may cause social, mental or physical problems.
The same paper says what separates food noise from ordinary thoughts about food is how intense and intrusive it is. It can feel more like going round in circles than simply being hungry.
Why GLP-1 medicines seem to quiet it
Many people taking semaglutide (Wegovy, Ozempic) or tirzepatide (Mounjaro, Zepbound) describe food noise fading, sometimes within days. So far the evidence is mostly what people report themselves, in surveys and interviews, rather than controlled trials. Researchers are still working out why it happens and how to measure it.
What helps, on or off a GLP-1
- Eat regular meals with protein. Long gaps and very low-protein days tend to make food thoughts louder.
- Plan meals ahead. Deciding once a day takes away a lot of small decisions.
- Keep tempting foods out of sight, and easy protein (yogurt, eggs) at the front of the fridge.
- Notice your triggers: stress, tiredness, boredom and scrolling food videos are common ones.
- Sleep: being tired makes cravings stronger for many people.
When food noise comes back
Some people notice food noise returning between doses, after a missed dose, or after stopping the medicine. Having routines in place (regular protein-first meals, a plan for the week) makes that easier to handle. If thoughts about food feel overwhelming or out of control, talk to your GP. Help is available.

Common questions

Persistent thoughts about food that feel unwanted or distressing. A 2025 paper in Nutrition & Diabetes defined it as persistent food thoughts the person finds unwanted or dysphoric, which may cause social, mental or physical harm.
Does Ozempic get rid of food noise?
Many people on semaglutide or tirzepatide say food noise goes quiet. So far this is mostly based on what people report, not controlled trials, and researchers are still studying why.
How do I reduce food noise naturally?
Eat regular, protein-first meals, plan your meals ahead, keep tempting foods out of sight, notice triggers like stress and tiredness, and get enough sleep.
