Wegovy foods to avoid

No food is banned on Wegovy. But big, greasy or fried meals, fizzy drinks, alcohol and very sugary snacks are the ones most likely to make you feel sick, bloated or uncomfortably full.

The short answer

  • Large portions: Wegovy slows how fast your stomach empties, so a normal-sized plate can feel like too much.
  • Fried, greasy and very fatty food: chips, takeaways, creamy sauces and pastries are common triggers for nausea and reflux.
  • Alcohol: the NHS says it's best not to drink alcohol on semaglutide, because it can increase side effects like feeling or being sick.
  • Fizzy drinks: the gas adds to the full, bloated feeling.
  • Sweets, cakes and sugary drinks: they fill your small appetite with little protein.

Why protein matters more than ever

When you eat much less, protein tends to drop too. A 2025 expert advisory on GLP-1 nutrition describes protein targets of about 1.2 to 1.6 g per kg of body weight a day during weight loss, or roughly 80 to 120 g a day, to help keep muscle. So the question isn't only what to avoid, but how to fit protein into a small appetite. How much protein you need.

Simple habits that help

  • Eat slowly and stop as soon as you feel full.
  • Smaller plates, more often: 4 small meals often work better than 2 or 3 big ones.
  • Don't lie down straight after eating if you get reflux.
  • Try a food again later: something that upset you in week 2 may be fine in week 10.
